Algebra I By Paul Foerster

I have been bombarded with algebra books and the outcome is unanimous . . . Foerster’s.  I think the best part about it is how each chapter is inundated with examples of the concept being explained.  It also helps that there is a companion DVD for those harder concepts.

I didn’t purchase the solutions manual since this can only be purchased at full price ($42.00) from the publisher rather than the pennies I paid for all these other math books.  In fact I think that solutions manual price is about the same amount I paid for all seven or eight math books in all.

And for those of you who may be interested, I’ve included some snapshots of the table of contents, three lessons and accompanied practice exercises.  Click on the images to enlarge.

  1. Thanks for sharing. From what I can see of the lessons you shared, it looks as if the text is basically written as self taught? Do you feel that’s a correct analysis? Is there enough explanation/instruction to be able to do the problems if an average student were seeing Algebra for the first time? I like that there are many examples, that’s really important.

Deborah replied: Yes, I believe that’s why this version stayed in print (it’s called the “Classic Version” now) because of the self instruction aspect for independent study. One of the first things my son commented on was how he liked that there were so many example problems for him to understand the concept. And if a student still needs additional help, there is a companion DVD available from Math Without Borders. However after discussing it, both my oldest two and I agreed that a solid math program before algebra is needed before beginning this text. For example, completing books like Practical Arithmetics Book 2 or Lial Pre Algebra.

    • Do you think this would be a good book to follow Saxon Algebra 1/2? Anna did Saxon Algebra 1 with very little problem, but she is also very good in math. Math, however, is Amilia’s weakest subject. She is currently using Saxon Algebra 1/2 but I think she might struggle with using Saxon for further Algebra (or anything else).

Deborah replied: ANY math book would be a good book to follow a Saxon book. ;-) In my more serious tone, Foerster’s is considered a challenging Algebra book. If you aren’t looking for something like that, then I would recommend Lial’s. Would you like me to bring both (Foerster & Lial) next time I’m in the city?

      • Yes, that would be great. I’d like to check them out before I buy either one. If Foerster’s is considered challenging, however, it might not be what I am looking for.
